I'm trying to figure out how the kindergarten enrollment process works for Boulder Valley schools. The web site says that they encourage registration by January, but what are the consequences of not doing that? If we were to move to Louisville in May and wanted our child to attend his local school the following September, is there a chance it would be filled up, and he would get bussed to another school? Or are you guaranteed admission to your local elementary school? Anyone else gone through something similar?

We moved to Louisville last June and I'm pretty sure that you can go to your local school. I'm not 100 percent sure but I know that we did not have any problems. Our 13 yo son goes to Monarch. Just give the school district a call, I'm sure they'll help you.

As long as the school has room, it will take your child. It is very rare that a child cannot attend his/her neighborhood school. It has not happened in BVSD for at least ten years. Almost all the schools have some "wiggle room" in their final enrollment numbers, to take into account new students moving into the district.

I am a grandma trying to help figure out similar issues. My grandson will start K next year. He is bright and curious. He also can get feisty if he is feeling bored or disinterested. Is he gifted, have no idea, but would like to understand how open enrollment works and if there are schools that are more 'friendly' to a more individualized and creative thinking set up.
