Perhaps ten years ago I took a course in Geology at the Univ. of Colorado, Boulder. Ground water was the topic. There were many field trips to interesting places in the area, and I remember one trip which took the students to a glacier in the Estes Park area. I seem to remember that this glacier was the water source for the Boulder area. Could anyone please confirm or deny this as , after ten or more years, I do not trust my memory. Any information on this subject would be appreciated. I am very interested in the study and teaching of Geology. Thank you. Wilma

Wink Boulder municipal water sources

Boulder muni water comes from 4 or 5 different locations. I think the biggest source is the N & S Arapahoe watersheds in the Indian Peaks wilderness (cont. divide) west of town. The water from there and from Boulder Creeks are filtered through the Betasso treatment plant in the foothills a few miles west of Boulder. BTW, the Arapahoe peaks area is closed to the public, no hikers allowed ever (lame!). Another main source is an open canal (ditch) somewhere near the Cont Divide close by Estes Park area. Apparently for it's time and even today this was a marvel of engineering and unimaginably hard contruction labor. The water from that canal/ditch eventually makes its way to the Boulder Reservoir water treatment facility. Certainly the City of Boulder gov't folks would be happy to help you with this info. Peace-out.

While i think there are some small "glaciers" that melt into the Boulder watershed, the big ones that you might have visited are not part of that system. The vast majority of the Front Range's water is from snow melt in the mountains.

Boy, you sure dug up an OLD post!

Boulder gets 40% of its water from Arapaho Glacier (which is melting so it is now considered a snowfield rather than glacier).
