If I remember right, there weren't even 100,000 people in the entire county when the space program got started.

(I see rabflmom made the same points and beat me to it. Oh well.)
Yep, most urban centers started before cars existed and walking or a horse was the only way to get around. People lived in the city or on the farm. FL was not like that as it had a couple of major cities and the rest was rural. By the time it started growing cars made it possible to go anywhere. An Urban center was not necessary.

Downtown Melbourne isn't quite like downtown sarasota but its probably the closest thing I think

It is a fun place to go. Not sure if the cruise ships that port here still do but at one time one of the excursions passengers could go on was to Downtown Melbourne.

I was just about to say that is considered "urban"to an extent but yes this is bedroom county in a sense. A lot people use it to buy a house in order to work in Orlando however it has plenty of growing tech and space industries itself.
