Hello. We are moving to the area in the next couple of months. My husband has taken a job at Patrick. Been looking to rent a house for a year first since we aren't familiar with this part of Florida. I have seen places on Merritt Island that look nice, also Cape Canaveral and Melbourne and Rockledge, but just wanted opinions. Is there any option of renting a house where restaurants, bars, etc. are within walking distance? We are moving from a walkable neighborhood near DC, so would be nice with the adjustment down there.
We are hoping to spend no more than $2k a month. Thanks for any input.

Either Indialantic or Cocoa Beach (close to downtown) will fit your criteria. There are about 50 restaurants and bars within a five block area of downtown CB and a slightly smaller amount in Indialantic. Cape Canaveral by the beach is cozy and walkable but not a lot of restaurants or bars close together.

You didn't mention your criteria for size or type of residence. That may affect your choices in downtown Cocoa Beach (which may be your bestt choice for a walkable restaurant filled area) with your price point. You may be wise to find a good realtor that specializes in rentals in Brevard. The market is hot now and anything decent that is priced well, goes pretty fast.

The Suntree / Pineda area has all that you’re looking for. Walk to some of the best schools in the county, 10 minutes to Patricks AFB and the beach, 5 min to the Intercostal, dining and grocery are within a short walk and 5 minutes out to I-95.
We own land (1.25 acres) in the N. Wickham area 500’ to the north of the Pineda Causeway off of Wickham Road, between the produce stand (if it’s still there) and the church where they hold the Greek festival every year.
The area is known to locals as Suntree and is just a few minutes from pretty much anything in the area. Anyone interested or looking to build can contact us through DM.
We bought the property to build a house on for our family of five (lived in Viera) but sold our house and moved away in 2017 and now live in the mountains of Tennessee. Love it here and have no plans on returning to Brevard County.
We have considered building a home on it to use as a VRBO and for family trips over to Disney and such, but are still undecided. We shall see.

Melbourne Beach has a pocket similar to Indialantic's Fifth Avenue along Ocean Avenue. It's a little quieter in terms of beach traffic from the mainland as well if that matters to the OP.

True. I like the Ocean Ave area. School-time traffic can be brutal at the intersection.

Downtown Cocoa Beach seems like it might work for you best. It has the most to do and is walkable. It'll be the most affordable to the beach depending on your budget as well.

Thank you. It's just my husband and I so we are flexible about size of a place and are fine with a smaller place if it is close to things. We currently rent a 1000 sq ft townhouse in the DC area. Would love to rent a single family home if possible, but open to a townhouse as well. I will look for a realtor as you mentioned!

We are going down in a couple of weeks to look around and decided to stay a few days in Cocoa Beach as we check out the area as, on paper, seems that it may suit us. Thank you for the info on Merritt Island as I had been wondering about that location.

Downtown Cocoa Beach is nice, but don't dismiss the area a bit further north. We bought a condo just off 520, everything is very walkable, and even though you do get tourists and cruise ship passengers, they tend to stay near the pier area, which is a mile further north.
Our beach access is Flagler Lane and we've never seen it overly crowded there, even during a launch.
