The very large final section, titled The Stem Array Sutra is now out in e-book formats. This is the first version since Cleary (who followed the Chinese) and Roberts' translation follows the Tibetan mainly. No immediate plans for a printed book.
Master Hsuan Hua gave lectures on the entire Avatamsaka Sutra over a ten year span. At the beginning of the series he said this about the foundational nature of it:
Quote:
After becoming a Buddha, Sãkyamuni Buddha reflected how all Buddhas of the past first spoke the Flower Adornment Sutra upon their becoming Buddhas, all Buddhas of the present also speak this sutra first, and all Buddhas of the future will also do the same. The Flower Adornment Sutra must be spoken first, in order for the foundation for Great Dharma to be established. The Flower Adornment Sutra is the foundation of all Buddhadharmas.
Manjusri Bodhisattva advises in Pure Conduct chapter 11:
Quote:
When in the midst of social gatherings with musical entertainment,
he should vow: “May all beings
find their pleasure in the Dharma
and realize such entertainments are unreal.“
When in the palace or in one’s home,
he should vow: “May all beings
enter the grounds of the āryas
and rid themselves forever of defiling desires.”
When putting on the strand of beads,
he should vow: “May all beings
relinquish false adornments
and reach the station of genuine truth.”
When ascending a tower,
he should vow: “May all beings
ascend the tower of right Dharma
and develop a penetrating vision of everything.”
When he engages in an act of giving,
he should vow: “May all beings
become able to relinquish everything
and acquire minds entirely free of fond attachments.”
When gathering together with an assembly,
he should vow: “May all beings
relinquish the many accumulated dharmas
and realize all-knowledge.”
When in the midst of dangerous difficulties,
he should vow: “May all beings
gain sovereign mastery in whatever they wish for
and become unimpeded in whatever they practice.”
Devas' daughters praise Fifth ground bodhisattvas in chapter 26:
Quote:
The Great Sea, so ancient and vast, for the first time, now moves.
The Buddha’s light, so ancient and far-reaching, now shines forth.
Beings, after a long and distant past, for the first time, are happy.
The voice of the great compassion, after so long, is now heard.
