Hello, My husband, 2 kids ages 4 and 1, were planning on making the drive from the DC area to visit family in Buffalo next week for the holidays. We would be driving near Pittsburgh, then the 90 past Erie through southtowns then to our destination in Cheektowaga. Given the recent reports on the news about the recent snow falls (and people stuck in their cars for 30hrs-)we were wondering if this roadtrip is not adviseable??? FYI my family is ultraconservative with safety and they are hesitant on us making the trip but are also saying we should do a "game time" decision. But it seems like Buffalo may be in for a harsher winter. Bringing back memories of the Christmas of 2001 being snowed in for 3 days due to a driving ban and snow to the top of our jeep cherokee...Thanks so much.
Game time decision is best. If there is Lake Effect along Lake Erie come up through central/eastern Pa use I-81 then west on I-86 or I90 to Buffalo. If I-90 is gettting Lake Effect then I-81 usually is not and vice versa. We have done this many times I-81 to I-86 in Binghamton the west to the I-390 get off in Geneseo the westward ho!
Is there a specific reason you are going through Pittsburgh & Erie? Whenever I go to visit my mom in the Baltimore area I usually go 219 to I 80, get off 80 near Clearfield PA (322 I believe) take that to 99 to the PA Turnpike to I 70. I don't know that I would advise that this time of year if there is snow in the forecast but you could 95 to 83 to Harrisburg, then take 11 & 11/15 all the way to Corning & 86 which will lead you to the Genessee Expressway. I usually get off in Mt Morris & take 20A the rest of the way but you could stay on 390 all the way to 90. I found either way is much faster than going all the way to Pittsburgh.
The DC area has had worse than usual winters the past couple as well.
