This has been going on for years I know, but no one has ever been able to explain exactly what makes Kenmore/Tonawanda stink so bad when it's either raining or going to rain. Sure reeks tonight, phew!

Wild guess - the pollutants in the Niagara River maybe. I've noticed that Niagara Falls (the actual falls, I mean) gets a stink of rotten eggs sometimes - maybe it's before a rain, I'm not sure. My best guess is that Occidential Chemicals may be the culprit.

The oil storage tanks on River Road ... the Water Treatment plant for the Town... any of the old business areas over on Sheridan by the west end of town.

In summer, it is the algae in places like Ellicott Creek and Tona. Creek that contribute.
In fall, it is pollen when it is just at rain.

The wind comes from the SW, most of the time. Check your map -- what is SW of you?

Ok, makes sense. Not worried about algae and pollen, but do you know if the other stuff is "dangerous"?

The tanks on River Road are the holding tanks for an oil refinery ( you'd think w/ them there, we'd get cheaper gas). It isn't - to my knowledege - where they make gasoline. The water is water treatment for drinking water for Tona. What is SW of you is the city of Buffalo, Lackawanna, and - farther down the lake into PA and parts beyond - areas where there was heavy industry. We get most of our bad air pollution via the Midwest!

You always smell natural ozone before and after rain. Most things are more pungent. That algae drove me nuts when I lived in Tona.... more vile than any other smell, esp. in August. You have to go all the way tot he source of the streams to find if there is anything on them.

If you want some pristine wilderness with no problems of having any pollutants, you are going to need to move to the middle of a forest. Buffalo was always an industrial city.
