Congrats!!!! Welcome to Buffalo and WNY!

  • If you have a FWD car, you should have good quality all season radials. If it's a newer car, it should have ABS and maybe electronic stability control, which are great assists in handling in the snow.
  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated.
  • Fill the windshield washer reservoir(s) with windshield washing fluid (which doesn't freeze up), not with water.
  • A snow brush with an ice scraper on one end is essential.
  • A pair of warm gloves and a good heavy coat are essential for comfort because it will stay cold through March and into April. If you don't have them, they may be hard to find. You probably can get both through LL Bean, though.
Hopefully, this winter from Hell, which has really been much more like winter in Minnesota that winter in WNY, will finally quit, and March and April will be more "normal" although it's going to take a while for all this snow to melt. At least the 10 day forecast looks encouraging.

Don't be afraid of the winter. Embrace it. Learn to cross country ski or snow shoe. Take your daughter sledding at Chestnut Ridge Park or Delaware Park. You can learn to downhill ski/snowboard together at Kissing Bridge or Holiday Valley.

Congrats!! If your new employer needs an attorney, let me know!

Get snow tires if you don`t have a 4x wheel drive. Just drive slowly on ice and snow packed roads. Just let the jackasses who want to speed go by you.

I think you will love the area. The cultural diversity and ethnic neighboroods are incredible.

The sports teams (Sabres and Bills) have great, hard core fans.

The re-development of the waterfront looks beautful. You`re only 90 minutes from Toronto, a great world class city (the NYC of Canada).

Even though I practice criminal defense and have a great distrust for the cops in Denver and the surrounding area, my opinion is that the New York State Police is one of the finest police organizations in the country.

A Subaru would treat you well in Western New York. I drove one during my four years at Syracuse and it made my life much easier. I grew up in Austin, TX, so I had no experience driving in the snow before relocating to Syracuse. I usually get all-season tires from Goodyear. They are a bit more pricey than Winter tires, but they are worth it when you are driving in regions that experience all four seasons.

Maybe try hitting up an empty parking lot during your first snow just so you can see how your car handles in that kind of environment.

If you don't want to scrape snow and ice off your car every morning then I'd advise at trying to get a place with a garage space.

I'll give a second to Subarus, especially if you plan on living/working in the city. The city streets, even the main ones, are never plowed as well as soon as suburban streets. You can always take the city streets home, too, in snowy weather if an accident or something has stalled traffic on the expressway. As long as the snow's not too high in the streets (like above the car's under carriage), a Subi will take you through it.

Keep in mind that "greasy" or icy roads are another matter, but Subi tend to handle those at least as well as other vehicles. Just remember to slow down and don't expect to be able to stop fast.

I'm on my second Forester, and my next car will also be a Subaru, probably a Forester as well.

I lived in the snow belt of Buffalo (East Aurora) and any car with good tires is all you need.
