Moving to Buffalo for a new position. I'm a single male in my early 30s. Just curious what local people's favorite hangout spots are. I've experienced the wonders of Elmwood village in person already and yes it is fun there. Where else? Allentown also seems fun for dining and nightlife. I drove past Hertel Ave and while it's pretty built up over there it is just not as pedestrian friendly as Elmwood in my humble opinion. I'll be living in Amherst. Any other recommendations as far as getting accustomed to Buffalo? What are places to go to for outdoor activities (hiking/kayaking)? Thank you all!

Kayaking:
  • Buffalo harbor complex and Buffalo River
  • Black Rock Channel
  • Erie Canal
  • Various parts of the Lake Erie shore south of Buffalo, especially around the various state and county beaches
  • Some parts of the Niagara River such as off Isle View Park in Tonawanda
  • Further afield, there's Chautauqua, Findlay, and Rushford Lakes plus others.

Hiking:
  • You can hike around Goat Island at Niagara Falls as well as along the rim of the gorge over to Lewiston. There's also a trail down into the gorge. There are also trails on the Canadian side.
  • Allegany State Park outside of Salamanca offers all kinds of trails from easy to challenging along with camping and cabin rentals. You can also kayak in Red House and Quaker Lakes.
  • Zoar Valley Day Use Area/Deer Lick Nature Sanctuary just south of Gowanda.
  • Chautauqua County has a trail system through primarily state forest lands.
  • You can also hike the rim of the Letchworth Gorge at Letchworth State Park south of Rochester.
