Hospital safety grades: two in the city get 'A' grades (New York: statistics, suburban)

Sisters Hospital on Main St. & Humboldt Pkwy. and ECMC (Erie County medical Center) get two of the three 'A' grades in the city. And Kenmore Mercy Hospital in the Town of Tonawanda gets the 3rd 'A'. Millard Filmore Suburban in East Amherst gets a 'C' as does St Joe's Hospital on Harlem Ave. in Cheektowaga (same system as Sisters & Kenmore Mercy).

I have heard more than one negative about ECMC and the opposite about Millard Suburban, but this proves otherwise.

Patient safety group gives A scores to three Buffalo-area hospitals

Three Buffalo-area hospitals earned a grade of A in a national patient safety organization’s scoring for how well hospitals avoid errors and accidents.
Nine hospitals in the region received a grade of C in the spring 2017 rating by The Leapfrog Group, an employer coalition that promotes hospital quality and patient safety.

The A's went to Erie County Medical Center and two Catholic Health hospitals – Kenmore Mercy and Sisters. The C's went to Kaleida Health's Buffalo General Medical Center, Millard Fillmore Suburban and DeGraff Memorial hospitals, as well as Olean General, Mount St. Mary's in Lewiston, United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, and Catholic Health's Sisters Hospital St. Joseph Campus in Cheektowaga and Mount St. Mary's in Lewiston.

Leapfrog grades hospitals in the United States on how they protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections. The group’s measures include how well a hospital avoids preventable errors or accidents, such as deaths from serious treatable complications after surgery. Other measures look at how well hospitals follow procedures to prevent problems, such as using computerized systems to order medications. Leapfrog based its grades on a voluntary survey it conducts, as well as quality-related hospital statistics publicly available from the federal government’s Hospital Compare website. Kaleida Health hospital system facilities are rated as one institution. The grades don’t reflect the results from the individual sites.

“We continue to improve quality and safety throughout our organization and will not be satisfied until all our hospitals receive an ‘A’ score,” Joe McDonald, president and chief executive officer of Catholic Health, said in a statement. “We are especially proud of Kenmore Mercy and Sisters Hospital and all of our physicians and staff at Catholic Health who work hard every day to provide our patients with the very best care.”

Of the 2,639 hospitals rated in the Leapfrog hospital safety score, 823 earned an A, 706 earned a B, 933 earned a C, 167 earned a D, and 10 earned an F. Fourteen of 139 rated hospitals in New York State received an A. "This rating confirms what we have worked towards repeatedly in recent years – the quality and compassionate care of our doctors, nurses, clinicians, dieticians, housekeeping, plant operations staff, our ECMC family, have all contributed to making ECMC a hospital of choice for patients seeking our care,” said Thomas J. Quatroche, Jr., president and chief executive officer of ECMC.
