UB ranked 89th top university by U.S. News & World Report, continuing steady rise

The University at Buffalo continues to perform well in higher education's most visible barometer of annual progress – the U.S. News & World Report rankings.

UB is ranked as the 89th best national university in the U.S. this year. In previous years it ranked 97th (2017), 99th (2016), 99th again (2015), 103rd (2014) and 109th (2013), 106th (2012), 111th (2011), 120th (2010) and 121st in 2009 and 2008.

UB also continued to rise in a related group, coming in as the 38th best public university. It ranked 41st in 2017 and 43rd the year before.

U.S. News tabulates its rankings through the use of quantitative data, such as graduation rate and alumni giving, and qualitative data culled from a survey by presidents, provosts and deans of admission.

Other notable ranks this year from the national university group include Cornell University (16th), the University of Rochester (33rd), Syracuse University (53rd), Binghamton University (80th), SUNY Stony Brook (80th) and Rochester Institute of Technology (102nd).

Here’s a look at the other Western New York colleges fared:

• SUNY Geneseo ranked 14th among northern regional universities, compared to 11th last year and 14th in 2016.

• St. Bonaventure University ranked 22nd in the same group, compared to 21st last year and 27th in 2016.

• Canisius College ranked 23rd in the group, compared to 22nd last year and 23rd in 2016.

• Niagara University ranked 43rd in the group, compared to 48th last year and 44th in 2016.

• The State University of New York at Fredonia ranked 50th in the group, compared to 56th last year and 61st in 2016.

• Alfred University ranked 62nd in the group, compared to 48th last year.

• SUNY Buffalo State ranked 103rd in the group, compared to 120th last year and 110th in 2016.

• Daemen College ranked 130th in the group, compared to 132nd last year. It was previously in an unranked grouping.

• Both Medaille College and D'Youville College were in the unranked grouping between 140 and 182.

UB related...

UB leads all WNY colleges in earning power, though it still trails 13 Upstate schools

Students attending the University at Buffalo can anticipate higher salaries than their counterparts at other Western New York colleges, according to new figures from the U.S. Department of Education.

The federal agency's Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) took a snapshot of former students a decade after they entered college. The median annual earnings for those ex-students from UB were $52,600.

That was almost $5,000 higher than Western New York's runner-up, St. Bonaventure University, whose former students had median earnings of $47,700 at the 10-year mark. Canisius College was third at $47,300. (A median is a midpoint, with half of all students finishing higher and half being lower.)

The Department of Education tabulated the median earnings for former students who are currently employed, 10 years after they initially arrived at a given college (and regardless of whether they subsequently graduated). Most of those ex-students would have been 27 to 29 years old when the statistics were collected.

UB finished first in the Buffalo area, but it was outperformed by 13 colleges in the other portions of Upstate New York. The Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences was far and away the Upstate leader, with median earnings of $124,700 a decade after entrance.

Click on the View Slideshow button for a rundown of 63 Upstate colleges that award bachelor's degrees, ranked from lowest to highest on the IPEDS earnings scale. Each school is listed with its number of fulltime undergraduates in 2017-2018 and its median earnings at the 10-year point. Slides for Western New York colleges are red; the others are green.

Western New York encompasses Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming counties. Those eight, in turn, are among the 48 counties that constitute Upstate New York, which is the portion of the state north of the 42nd parallel.
