"People in this community really care about the market and want to see it succeed," said Christopher Dunne of Highland Planning.

Developers are hearing from the community about the future revitalization of the Broadway Market. On Wednesday, CJS Architects, Highland Planning, Public Market Development, and Developments by JEM held a virtual public meeting to discuss input from Western New Yorkers on the redevelopment of the Buffalo landmark.

Dunne said, "They also want to improve the look and the feel of the market so they want an airier market, they want a lighter market. They want a market that has more of a connection with the outside and with the neighborhood."

Neighborhood is steadily changing - investments all up and down Broadway toward downtown, hundreds of apartments, thousands of homes re-occupied, refurbished, and now filled with Bangladeshi and others coming from NYC, dozens of associated new businesses in the neighborhood. Still a long way to go, but looking nowhere as bleak as a few years ago.

Cheapest actual house currently available in that Zip is a 2/1 for 34,950 - which is still cheap, but not $1. House is probably not livable, either. Typical prices are 40-70k in the area, a few over 100k.

Broadway-Fillmore thrives with new immigrants

I stopped at the Clinton-Baily Market on a Saturday a couple of weeks ago, and the market was packed with people - more than half of the shoppers appeared to be Middle Eastern and South Asian, and many other languages spoken (I recognized French, Spanish, some Eastern European language not Russian or Polish, etc). A major transition is quietly happening on the East Side.

If this statement is true, where are these people? You would think they would be spending their money there now.

What he really means is, we want to spend taxpayer money on something the community only supports during Easter, but we are WISHING it does bring community support. Think about this, if the market could improve with baby steps, more tax revenue would be generated, to be able to finance more improvements, without subsidies.

Huh? It is a market that is open Monday-Saturday: https://broadwaymarket.org/

So, it is likely looking for input from customers and those that live in the neighborhood.

Also, the problem is that subsidies are a part of the game, whether people like them or not across the country.

Subsidies are stupid and ultimately increase costs. They SOUND go, and that's why they are used. There also is an opening for corruption, as to WHO gets them. Way to political. I far prefer lower taxes.

I just don't understand why they don't raise rents, or bring in more vendors? That would be the quickest, easiest way to improve the place, and to finance improvements

Sure, but even places with lower taxes use subsidies for many businesses.

They probably don't raise rents, because that may push some vendors out.

And for these reasons, again, I repeat. The community doesn't support it. I'm sure there is a very small local community that supports it, but not the greater community, who need to support it. Everyone knows where it is, and aren't afraid to go there for Easter. If it can't support current rents, and even needs subsidies, how can this place survive, no less spending even more taxpayer money on it?

"The organizations that led Wednesday's meeting will issue a final report of recommendations for the Broadway Market's revitalization in January 2021. But officials say it could take several years for plans to be approved, raise funds, start construction, recruit merchants, and have a grand opening."
