(for those who would like to squeeze Buffalo out more) Buffalo still is the largest city in Erie County... Of the 921,390 County residents, 285,018 are from the City of Buffalo, 19,064 are from the City of Lackawanna and 32,359 are from the City of North Tonawanda.

Check the US Cenesus to find a town larger in population worthy enough to be the County Seat.

-Why do you always want to argue?

-I am stating facts.
-Buffalo is the County Seat of Erie County only since that is where the county decideed to put it. It happened to be the biggest location. It also is reasonably central North/south - but not east/west in the county (unless you live in lake Erie like a fish).
-A county seat does not HAVE to be the largest location in a county. I cited Little Valley.

What is the problem with your arguing?

Thumbs up Knowledge is Power

FedupWNy and BuffaloTransplant,

Thank you for your comments and explnations. You, both, tought me a lot about the government structure in the county government. I enjoy the Buffalo-Niagara area and familiar with the Little Valley (it's beautiful). I appreciate sharing your knowledge. It's power. Did you learn something from others viewpont?

However, I was trying to understand the local government structure because where it was completely different in the country where I am coming from originally.

This is why I asked, "Is Buffalo a capital of Erie County?" This is the way it seems to me. This is my undestanding.

Does the Erie Government pay for renting the Buffalo City Hall?

The City pays for City Hall. It was built in the 1930s during the Depression as a WPA project. It is magnificent when clean ( it hasn't been cleaned in a while). If you have never been in it, go look inside at the observation deck, the murals, the Common Council chambers and even ( not kidding) the lavatories in the basement -- stalls are marble and doors are inch thick oak! City Hall houses the city offices, the Board of Education and several other agencies, all city. There are not county employees there.

County Hall is 2 parts: an "old" county hall ( late 1800s) and the new ( fairly recent). The old is magnificent. Go look at the probate court area and the older county court rooms and even where the jury room where you wait for jury duty is; look at the statues atop old county hall, check out the County Legislature Hall. The newer part is not as beautiful; actually, some of it is ratty. Other county employees are in the Rath Building and several other locations.
