Thumbs down bad

The truth is in the name. It is a holding center, therefore many people there have not even been proven guilty of a crime. I have heard that the prison has made some improvements but still not good enough from what I hear. Some prisons are like resorts and I do find that rediculas, but reasonable conditions would be respectable.

I had a friend who spent four days at the holding center. I tried for two days to reach someone by phone there just to see if he was indeed there. The phone would ring 25-30 times before I would give up the call. I tried all hours of the day. On the third day I actually got someone to pick up the phone in the records office. Seemingly very up set to have to of picked up the phone to begin with. I was rudely informed that my friend was there but could not get any other information from them. On day four I called some of the courts to find out where he had been arraigned then called public defenders offices to see if maybe he was assigned a lawyer. I finally reached someone at the chriminal defence unit in buffalo who pointed me in the right direction. This person let me know what questions to ask. I needed an ICN number just to send a letter and had to ask specifically what court and if bail was set. So another day of calling before I could get someone to answer the phone at the holding center. By the time I figured out what his bail was and that he was unable to make collect calls to a cell phone, those are against the rules. How many people have land lines anymore? The person with a land line has to call their phone company and request the ability to recieve collect calls from a correctional facility too. He didn't have access to a phone book to look up anyone's numer either. I was able to write a letter and list phone numbers for my friend to call. By the time I sorted through this type of information and sent a letter, my friend was transfered to the alden facility. More research to find an address to send a letter to Alden. I don't know what the conditions are like inside the place but they certainly didn't treat the non criminal people on the outside with any respect or dignity. There should be information on a wedsite instructing outsiders what the policys are and how to get information for someone who is being detained there. Once he was transfered things got much easier to find out information and be able to communicate with him.

And criminal defense lawyers get a bad rep for protecting the rights of the accused. Without them where would we be? Americans need to demand humane conditions in remand facilities (holding centers) now! The conditions are deplorable and criminal.
