Hopefully, it doesn't happen, as this(along with a few other things) would solidify a complete upheaval of politicians in the Assembly.

I'm not against closing some of the smaller parks. Of the parks I have heard of, they are only closing the swimming areas. I'm glad they are not closing the large ones, ie Old Forge, Allegheny, Letchworth, Niagara Falls etc. I would be ok with the closures so long as they are not rezoned and they remain state owned land. That way the forest will reclaim itself. I usually drive a couple hours to get to the ones I like anyway, a little further won't hurt anything.

There is 178 state parks, if we close 55, there is still 123. If we closed more, I would not be against it so long as the land is not rezoned. I'm more worried about the state financial crisis.

Does anyone know if the closures are based on usage? That could be why nothing around NYC will actually close, 8 million people who want to go camping?

The pools at Jones Beach were raunchy in the 1960s. I expect they were upgraded, but they can't keep the beach clean anyway ( I grew up down there)

I worry about the idiocy of closing Niagara falls ( send people over to Canada to spend money that could be spent herre), Allegheny ( decent campsites for out of state people and cabins -- not fancy, but good). Sacketts Harbor is always full of people at the historic sites...........

None of the truly historic sites should be closed and not the good campsites. -- they are tourist sites. Maybe the governer wants no tourists?

During the depression, the CCC was created by the federal gov. to hire young men and replant trees... their legacy is all around us. I wish today's gov. could be as creative, intelligent, and forward-thinking.

Right now NY's energy comes from dirty inefficient sources. We could change that by zones SOME (a very little bit) of this land which isn't going to be used for productive purposes.
That is something that I have not thought of. However, one of the reasons for a state park is to preserve nature. The Adirondacks for example. Letting the land go back to forest wouldn't exactly cost much.

Well said but would society be as willing to allow their sons/daughters to work in such a program today? My guess it would be one continues law suite because someones feelings got hurt. It was a great program and could be again...however..
