My wife and I currently live in Montreal QC but are planning on moving to Burlington VT. We are also expecting our first child.

We haven't decided if we should move to Vermont before or after our baby's birth. Any comments on our timing?

If we do decide to move before, can you recommend a good hospital in the area?

Looking forward to your comments.

Thanks.

There is only one hospital in the Burlington area....the University of Vermont Medical Center (formerly called Fletcher Allen). There is a smaller hospital in St. Albans (Northwestern VT Medical Center) which is north of Burlington, about 10 minutes south of the Canadian Border.

IIRC, if the child is born in the U.S., that confers U.S. citizenship to it. The ramifications for it later in life are huge, with some doors opening and others closing. Predicting world events in twenty years is nearly impossible. If you like the way Canada runs its government, have the child there. If you like the U.S. and feel it would have a better chance as a U.S. citizen, then have it in the U.S. Personally, I would choose Switzerland.

A lot of folks are having their kids at home with midwives these days but it doesn't sound like that is what you are looking for.

One of mine was born at Fletcher Allen and we had a fine experience using Maitri as my wifes OBGYN . There is plenty of opportunity for a natural birth, water birth etc at Fletcher Allen/UVMMC too.

I know that some people go to Copley in Morrisville too. My wife visited and decided against it, at the very least because it was about as far or farther than Fletcher Allen/UVM medical center. The nice thing about UVMMC is if there is a problem, they pretty much have all the resources right there versus the prospect of having to call someone in and/or transfer you or your baby.

Being so close to the border, does Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans treat patients from Canada?
