Your advice, please.

I'll be taking my junior on a tour of a number of colleges in Vermont and NYS. I've never driven between Burlington and Albany and am looking for the best route between the two cities. Please bear in mind I am not looking for a scenic drive, just looking to get from point A to point B in the most time efficient manner.

Your help it greatly appreciated

Take 7 south to Vergennes.
Then 22A south to Fair Haven. Route 4 west into NY. In Fort Ann go west on Route 149. 149 will end at Route 9. Go left (south) and you'll come to I-87 in about a quarter mile. Take 87 south to Albany.

I agree. My son went to UAlbany so I made the drive from Montpelier to Albany many times.

Oh yeah, and you might as well forget about scenic. Those towns between Rutland and I-87 are largely pretty grim.

22a is a much nicer drive than coming in from Rutland. The roads can be pretty curvy though and sometimes you have to be careful because of people in a big rush to get back to NY.

This pretty much nails it. If you want to add scenery, and a little time, take the ferry across Lake Champlain from Route 7 (Charlotte) to Essex NY and then wend your way out to the Northway (I-87). If you take this Route you will go through the Immigration Check Point just below Twin Peaks. They are decent folks, but very interested in what you have in your car and where you are headed. It adds a few moments to the trip.

Caution: You can go like hell on the roads mentioned above, BUT every once in a while there is a local constabulary looking to add to the town's coffers. Especially be careful where speeds drop down to 35 or 30 (I think one town goes down to 25 for a couple hundred feet just to enhance the revenue experience) going through the towns. They are generally not well marked and the local cop likes to hang out just to keep people "honest".
