I've been offered a very nice opportunity in Burlington, VT, but I'm not interested in living there. I might be ok with New Hampshire, so is there any possibility of commuting from a town in New Hampshire maybe twice a week for staff meetings or whatnot? I can work from home the rest of the time, and in bad weather could skip meetings. I drive a 4WD truck and come from where winters are bad, so the weather doesn't scare me. Does anyone do this? If I did live, perhaps, in rural Vermont, what's the tax hit?

I don't understand the tax question...if you live in NH and work in VT you will still pay VT income tax. NH property taxes are very high. Vermont's are too but if your income is under a certain threshold (I want to say 120K?) you get a "discount" on your property tax.

I wouldn't want to do that commute, even if it were 2x a week. Lebanon NH to Burlington is about 90 minutes each way in good weather.

There are plenty of great rural areas within 30 to 45 minutes of Burlington.

Yeah, that would be the worst of both worlds. Whammed both ways on taxes and a ride up slip hill as well. With that long a drive and a meeting, weather can shift. My guess is the OP is conservative. There are still a number of conservative towns in Vermont.
