Really not much room for private brew pub in the 501c3 verbage fro IRS site --

The exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3) are charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition, and preventing cruelty to children or animals.* The term charitable is used in its generally accepted legal sense and includes relief of the poor, the distressed, or the underprivileged; advancement of religion; advancement of education or science; erecting or maintaining public buildings, monuments, or works; lessening the burdens of government; lessening neighborhood tensions; eliminating prejudice and discrimination; defending human and civil rights secured by law; and combating community deterioration and juvenile delinquency.

That designation is not going to magically do anything to local regulations, rent, insurance or the myriad reason this seems like a bad idea. It means you'd have to account for al the inflows / outflows tom comply with tax exempt status, but little else...

There is "out of the box" thinking, and then there "out of planet" schemes...

My take on life is if you want to succeed don't be part of the norm, think outside of the box.

Maybe look into the possibilities and requirements of a 5013c non-profit and/or a members only club. Have the availabilities of each patron to purchase a club membership for a small cost at the door if they prefer. 5013c's get different availabilities and tax defferment but there are also a great deal of Federal hurdles to jump for that to be a reality.

I am retired military and in my flying career I have had the pleasure to see quite a few different taverns, pubs, restaurants, bars and dives. I have managed restaurants but I am by no means a specialist at anything. I do know though that private clubs / 5013c non profit groups fall under different scrutiny from the powers to be.

If you don't believe a private club environment would work then show me any VFW or American Legion that has failed.

I too am considering moving back to the Lakeland area as my daughter and her family live there. I have also lived in Lakeland previously and know it is a mixed bag for succeeding or failing there.

For what it is worth, I believe you have the passion to make this work but have you entered all of the required information for the completion of your passion.
I don't believe the traditional thought processes works well in today's applications when working with the general public. Having a private club may give you the availability to control your club in a different perspective than the everyday restaurant/pub. If you want a special place then think in special/different thoughts, if you want to be the normal passion restaurateur/pub then I agree with one of the previous comments, bars/pubs and restaurants have a very high failure rate.

Have you looked into a good divorce lawyer, might need one, if the wife's not into it guess what.
Think/brainstorm outside of the box and make your dream a reality. The best of luck to you with what ever you choose.

Want a name; The Brewers Pub Club, (LOL)

An ethnic themed pub in a decent demographic will almost always work if you don't squander too much on decor (biggest mistake is over building). As long as you want to spend every day and night in a bar. Pubs do not work with part time owner/managers.

Anyone remember "All in the Family?" Archie tried to run a small family bar that he always patronized after working a shift. Never worked out too well if I recall correctly. He showed some of the pitfalls.
