I was wondering about this because one time I had a temp job in the accounting dept. of a women's clothing manufacturer. But the CEO was a (straight) man. He had nothing to do with women's clothes. I don't understand why he was the CEO of that company instead of someone who actually wore those clothes and was truly interested in the fashion biz. In fact, their own employees all got generous discounts on those clothes, but it seemed that only the sales and merchandising depts. actually took advantage of them and wore those clothes. People in my dept. (95% women) were mostly obese and so the clothes didn't fit their size range, they were also much older than the customers who the styles were aimed at. They dressed really frumpy as if they were at home lounging around and I found it odd that they'd work for a company whose product they didn't care about.

The CEO is there to increase revenues, growth and profitability. Thats it. Everything else is a non-factor. The person who can increase those three attributes ought to be the CEO, especially if I am investing in the company.

this is the kind of dumb stuff you come up with when you sit around smoking marijuana and talk to other idiots.

What's that supposed to mean? How would you feel as a consumer if the CEO of the company that made a certain product had no personal interest in it? I'd feel like they're out of touch with the consumers' needs.

Seriously? CEO's do not need to personally use the companies products in order to be successful and get good customer feedback. That is why they oversee the hiring of market researchers, customer focus groups, product usability testers, etc... etc... CEO's can delegate these jobs to the right specialists.

By your logic, pharma co. CEO's would be taking the drugs, dog food CEO's would be eating Fido's food, etc.... BTW, pantyhose were invented by men and one of the best-selling bras around today was designed by a male engineer.

Granted, but in that example, it would be nice if the CEO was a dog lover at least. That way, they 'represent' the company and what it stands for better, instead of just being some 'suit'.
I'd also rather have my women's items designed by a woman who wears them.
Pharma co. - someone with a medical background or a former pharmacist.

Now if it was the VP or CFO, I wouldn't care, but the CEO is at the head.

Why not the VP or CFO? They are very elite positions. Shouldn't anyone who works for their company use their companies' products and services if they can?

No, it makes no difference on the business side of things unless the CEO is a public cheerleader for said product. And even then, most spokespeople are just paid actors anyway.

In a perfect world they should, but its not possible in most companies, because of their size and array of products and services. If you sold one widget, I would expect the CEO to use it and know everything about it. You can take all of the customer feedback, focus groups, product testers, and market researchers and take that data and manipulate it any way you want. If you have a CEO that has lost touch with his widget, you will have a company that has lost its soul and they are without a doubt losing customers, which translates to reduced revenue, which translates to the company going down the tubes.

Its more imoprtant that the CEO know s now t make a profit than design. He hires deisngers for the purpose of designing cloths.Look at componaies run by designers and you like se liited colthes prodcued and hgher price. If you look there are clothes designed and comnaie run by desigers. They tend tobe very limited I there ablity to mass produce asnd like;y not interested. Selling to the masses requires many compromises or we would all be driving Ferraris with auto enthusias as CEOs of companies.Henry Frod brought the auto tot eh market not by being a desingers but a cost thinking person .
