They're not "closing them off", ie putting some barriers around them so they may or may be open later when the economy picks up - they are closing them, period.

I don't know why the need employees at Lowes or Home Depot anyway. Their knowledge base is zero, they just load the shelves. A robot can do that. If you want actual advice, go to your mom n pop hardware store.

Of course, as we all know, between Mayors Giuliani and Bloomberg, opening the city up to big-box retailers has always been the way to go. (Isn't it peculiar how being elected to political office suddenly makes you think you know more than the 8 million people who call this city home?)

Yes. I find the strategy is to enter a neighborhood and initially hire and train a very good and informative staff while undercutting the mom and pop's price wise. Then, after forcing the local stores to close, you hire only stupid and uncaring staff, pay them less, and sell inferior goods. I cannot tell you how many times I have had to return things or have had even name brands fall apart on me that were purchased at Home Depot, which is the home for most of my experience.

I would've thought Home Depot would be hit, too, by the housing slump!

Just more solid proof how bad the construction industry has been devastated during this deep deep economic DEPRESSION. Yes I put that word in caps to suggest facts rather then say what this govt tells the nightly news to report to the Sheep. All lies.

I have no sympathy for the big blue and big orange who only want your little green. The original business model was to hire knowledgeable ex contractors and pay them well as store employees has long since changed. Today they are mostly being paid barely over minimum scab wage and the total grand sum of the big box store employees home improvement experience are they may have hung a curtain rod for Grandma.

These stores deserve to suffer but my heart goes out to all those who will be laid off. But don't worry. Your govt will fail to include them in the new monthly depressing numbers of the newly unemployed that will be reported.

Just to put it into perspective, they have 1,710 stores in total with 234,000 employees. So they are closing .01% of their stores and laying off .008% of their workforce. If anything this is just closing down stores which are not profitable which is perfectly normal if you ask me. Nothing to panic about.

I haven't seen anyone panicking...
most of the comments I've seen are about the over-saturation aspect.
