Any Allstate agents out there? My wife may sell her small business and a friend of mine is telling her to buy a Allstate agency from an agent retiring. Allstate only gives them less than $.50 on the dollar. He said a book could be 100k or a larger one could be 200-350k. Any info, advice, would be appreciated

I had Allstate Insurance. My agent retired and sold his business. The new agent / owner was terribly unresponsive and I now have a different insurance carrier.

I was happy with Allstate and happy with the premiums for Home, Auto and Umbrella but with crappy service I decided to shop insurance and made a change.

My advice would be not to buy more than you can handle and if you don't understand the business, learn quickly so you hopefully don't get overwhelmed and lose too much business.

One thing I was not happy with was all the false advertising that Allxxxxx does. Something to the effect that If you don't have an accident you get a check in the mail. Total BS.

Could you ask her how much the checks are for?

If you were starting from the ground up, go independent! And it's not even close. Independent is the way to go! More money. More freedom. More selections. You can pick and chose what is best for your clients. There are way better companies out there than Allstate. Especially on the Life and Financial products.

But you are talking about an established agency already vs. what? Overall, captive insurance agency is no longer what it use to be. Just do a google search and you'll find a lot of things wrong with being a captive agent for Allstate, Farmers, and State Farm.

I don't know any active Allstate agents but I did know some in the past and they hated what Allstate is doing to their business and agency. I know some just straight out got sick of Allstate's BS and left. I don't know how it is at this moment. Has it improved? I don't know. But if you have experience and know the ins and out of business and/or insurance, independent is the way to go.
