trying to record my son singing some singer's song on you tube, is this illegal in terms of copy rights? I see millions do this on you tube.

The only times you might not get away with it is if the artist in question has no videos on YouTube. For example, Prince doesn't want his work on YouTube. I've had trouble finding Van Morrison on YouTube (though it may be different now). I don't think most artists are particularly...aggressive?...in pursuing people who are just doing it for their own personal enjoyment (karaoke).
