I would like to visit Calgary and Edmonton this summer and wondered if anyone had some traveling tips. My wife and I will be in Minnesota in mid-June and have to be in Vancouver mid-July. I am thinking about either piecing together some kind of itinerary for Alberta in between MN and Vancouver, or just returning to FL and visiting Alberta after Vancouver.
The second option is attractive because it's easier for us to be away from home for two 3-week periods rather than six weeks straight, and also because I've discovered it's quite reasonable to rent a one-way car from Calgary to Vancouver while it's outrageous to get one in the other direction.
But the first option would seem to be more reasonable geographically. In MN we'll already be halfway to Vancouver and Alberta would also be right on the way. The only problem is I haven't found any practical (i.e., good balance of cost and convenience) way to get there. What suggestions do you all have? Car rentals, buses, trains or planes? Seems like the cheapest flight is STL to YEG, but STL is a bit too far out of the way to make sense. I'd probably consider flying out of CHI, DSM or OMA in addition to MSP.
If you're going to fly, as soon as you cross the border, the prices go up exponentially. While MN is "close" to BC/AB in comparison to FL, it's still about 1200 miles from Minneapolis to Calgary.
If you have the time, you're better off to fly to Seattle, rent a car, and do a three week loop back to Seattle.
You could fly from MSP to somewhere in Montana/Wyoming and visit Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks on your way to AB. If you're into that sort of thing. Honestly though, I would not spend too much time in AB. Outside of Banff/Jasper/Lake Louise, there's not much to see. Vancouver Island (note that Vancouver is not on Vancouver Island!) is a much nicer place to visit.
