Ya I am moving from Portland, OR to central California... but i don't know where. the reason why i want to move to this part of the state because it has the beautiful Yosemite and Sequoia(has mt. Whitney highest point in the lower 48) national parks, and the beautiful central coast with excellent everything.. and the central valley that has beautiful blossom trails, good weather( i like the climate there) and nice green hills on the east side that make beautiful vineyards

i have considered mountain communities like Oakhurst, shaver lake, and central coast communities such as san luis obispo, san juan bautista and templeton, as well as valley cities such as salinas, visalia, woodlake ect.. but don't know where..

Go for Fresno (the northern half) or Clovis. Centrally located and not far to drive to Yosemite or the Central Coast. Fresno is big enough to give you many amenities such as shopping, night life or whatever.

Well, what are some of your other criteria? How about things like:
weather
work
school
housing prices/budget
proximity to larger cities
allergy considerations/air quality

Have you visited any of these areas? If not that should help to narrow things down. They all have their own vibes, micro climates, amenities, job market, level of smog/clean air, crime, etc...

Derek

Whatever you do, don't go live in the Central Valley area. Extremely hot, dry, ugly, and full of farming chemicals. Many of the cities there also have a high crime rate.

I love coastal areas, but they can be a bit boring after a while unless you really enjoy water sports and boating. However you're usually close to "mountains" or large hills that you can also access.

I think I might prefer some of the Sierra towns - there's variation in climate, some areas are quite beautiful or at least close to natural beauty, they have fishing, rafting, skiing, gold panning (yeah, I'm one of THOSE ), and of course great hiking.

A lot depends on your economic situation, if you don't need to work

I always liked the land west of the 101 near Templeton, Calif along HWY 46. Beautiful land there... Lot's of vineyards and rolling green hills. Also, Paso Robles/Atascadero is closeby for shopping and restaurants.

I'd say a good 99% of the central valley is crap for living conditions. It's one big toxic manufacturing plant for mass-produced produce. A lot of illegals and a lot of home-town hispanic areas (meaning little mexico type towns scattered about). Stay west of the central valley... unless you're moving into the Sierras.

Derek nailed some of the important questions, including what type of job you are looking for, housing, etc.

Also what do you consider an acceptable job commute? I know people who commute from Oakhurst or Visalia to Fresno for work everyday, some hate the road time others don't mind the tradeoff.

A little more info would provide more useful answers.

Portland is not unusual compared to this part of the Valley.

City-data's crime index (higher means more crime):
Portland - 2008 index of 439.7; 2007 index of 497.3
Fresno - 2008 index of 406.4; 2007 index of 421.2

Hhmm, there are more acres of registered organic farming in Fresno County than in Monterey County or in San Luis Obispo County or in Ventura County or in many other areas of the state. Of course no one realizes that, they all want to think of the Central Valley as being only corporate farming. A little research sometimes is needed.

Isnt fun when someone asks a question and all the nice people on CD provide a wealth of information that would take hours or days to find, then the poster just doesn't answer back. Not even a tiny little thank you.
Well maybe they'll show up.

Maybe they went to Salinas against my advice or without having read it first.

Gee, and what makes you think the original poster just happens to have free time to go on a forum on the internet? Do you know them? No. Do you even know the situation? So why complain like a little b***? Why even post in this thread if your not even contributing?

Anyways.. money is not a problem for me, fortunately. I prefer a place with lots of nature, no to crowded and a place where good food is around
