I read this because I was curious about the cost of electric and gas your way. Well, let me just say this is nothing compared to what folks here in Philly pay to PECO....

A bit higher than in Washington state, though. Washington state has one of the cheapest utilities rates in the US.

Utility cost in California vary greatly by supplier and by amount use (the "tier" you're in). If you're a high user, you might be paying >30 cent/kWh for each additional kWh. Because of that, conservation pays back very quickly if you're in a high tier and if you take advantage the many rebates the utilities offer. Most people who complain about high utility bills in California are getting hit by those expensive tiers, and a taking steps to cut back could save them some serious scratch.

I have a 2,500 SF home and my December bill was $234. We have elderly that love high heat so that is the reason. The summer months it runs under $100. Gas is cheap, electricity is expensive. This is in the SF Bay Area with Sunset climate zone 14. Fairly mild as Northern California goes.
Now relatives that live in Santa Barbara and San Diego have much lower costs. I believe they rarely need heat in the winter or cooling in the summer.
Unfortunately, California homebuilders, for the most part, do not site a home to allow proper solar insolation. They insulate per energy standards but that is about as far as they go. There are a few builders that try better. Until they start designing with nature then PG& E will continue its price increases. Any home in California can be independent of the grid. We are blessed with such a great climate.
And, no reason to "feel bad" it is what it is.

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but wanted to say that we are moving to California from Arizona where we currently pay over $200/month for electricity in a 1 bedroom 1 bath condo rental.
So I was very glad you posted your question so I could be relieved that we wouldn't be paying the same in CA.

The key to lowering your utility bill in California is to make sure every appliance that can be run on natural gas, is run on natural gas: Gas heat; gas water heater; gas stove; gas dryer. Minimize your electrical use, and maximize your natural gas use. Gas is so much cheaper that in the winter you might be better off running the natural gas house furnace over wrapping yourself in an electric blanket.

1 person, studio apartment in San Jose. Usually around $21 per month (combined gas & electric with PG&E). It was around $15 before I got my big screen TV.

That sounds about right. I help out a friend (another story for another day) and his electric bill (Edison) is in the 20-40 range depending on heater use.

I'm having a problem regarding my electric bill!!! i use to pay 40-50 bucks every 2 months... the most is 71 dollars. Today i received my bill and saw 257 dollars!
