Oh yeah and you wont have to deal with neo cons
Tell that to the business owner and two cops that were murdered in the last few months - Santa Cruz also has a higher violent crime rate than Watsonville, Salinas, and Vallejo - it is in fact one of the highest violent crime rates in the state, and it has the highest property crime rate in California for medium to large size cities.

Stick to mid county - Capitola, Aptos, and Soquel, that's the nicest part of the county, and much better than the city of Santa Cruz

Actually, I agree with that. The housing stock is very expensive in SC but is not particularly well maintained or cared for. Palm Springs beats SC on that issue, IMO and the cost of living there is much lower, too.

Palm Springs is great from Nov. - March for weather, but it has 4 solid months of hellaciously hot weather, so I do think Santa Cruz wins in the weather department.

I think the OP should choose based on his/her values and research. They are different places. Just because some people on the internet prefer Santa Cruz doesn't mean the OP will.
