The thing is,where we buy a home is probably where we're going to settle for good.We might buy a bigger house in the same city, but not move cities.I've been moving around enough with the Marines, and it's not nice to have to re-settle somewhere.I've been looking up cities within an hour of Reno, and some of them are actually nice.I'm just looking for second opinions or cities I haven't thought of.Truckee is within a half hour of Reno, and it doesn't get very hot and my husband is willing to drive.
You're right, college is just a short amount of time,so why not choose a city not too far from a good college? That's our thought process.

You are going to experience hot unless you are right on the coast. Some places aren't as hot as others, but they are still warm. July and August averages don't fall below 90 until you get above 5,000 ft. I spent a week this summer near Monitor Pass at 7500 ft and the coolest day was 87, the warmest was 94. It was hotter up there than it was in Sacramento the whole time. You are only going to reduce it, not get away from it.

Anyway, here is a map of community colleges. I suggest looking at the college catalogs. Some of them don't have much of a course selection. Others are excellent.

Auburn, Placerville, Sutter Creek/Jackson, and Sonora are the only places you are going to find big box stores. in the Sierra Nevada.

I agree that Truckee might be the only place snowy enough and not TOO hot in the summer that's still near shopping and a college in Reno. Reno, however, is high desert and does get quite hot in the summer, not as bad as Vegas, but averaging in the 90s.

You might think about Quincy if you're thinking UNR. 70 miles away, but he would be an out of state student. There's a community college in town too.

You're not going to find what you want in California. Anything high enough to be "snowy" is apt to be a fairly small community and certainly not a college town. The Lake Tahoe area is about as close as you will come to your requirements, but the best you find education-wise is a community college.

Why not South Lake Tahoe, or if you want to be closer to Reno Truckee could do but I think SLT is larger.

There are many reasons to chose Truckee over South Shore, that South Shore is larger is just one, that it is flat and somewhat slummy are others.
