One of the many reasons I love California are these Indian Summer days. It's been warm and beautiful along the Central Coast (upper 60s - low 70s) while Bitter cold grips most of the nation, with more snow on the way.

These are some of my fondest memories of growing up in California along the coast. The beaches were empty for the most part, there was little to no smog (you can see for miles) and the weather is perfect. Here are a few shots of such times starting with a couple recent one's from Monterey:

Mid January Hermosa Beach:

Late December Torrance Beach:

Early March Manhattan Beach Pier:

I also have memories skiing and snowboarding in weather like this in both the Sierra and San Bernardino Mtns. Only wish I took more pictures back then. How many of you have great memories of California Indian Summers mid-Winter?

Derek

Sshhh. Don't you realize people on east coast have access to the internet and can find out about our little secret? What do you want? More of them moving here, wearing their disgusting red sox and yankees caps, crowding our freeways, and telling us how everything is better back east?

Naah, it's old news. The secrets been out for too long now. It started in the 50s with the Beach Boys, then the 60s with the Mamas and the Papas and on so on. Ppl have been freely comin' and goin' from CA for generations. Now they are less likely to move to here with the economy, unemployment, housing crisis, talk of the Big One hitting, etc... But ppl will still come and go as they always have. And its obvious to see why. There will always be a draw for some.

Thanks Gentoo. While not a birder per se I've always loved seagulls. Growing up at the beach brings back so many memories of these birds since probably before I could walk. Here's a few more (all mid winter as well):

Too bad you're not a birder as these are excellent shots. The last one is a Western Gull

Am I the only sane person in Ca? I am so sick of the moronic, vapid idiots on the news and the sun-baked, mush brained Ca's who think this is, in any way a good thing! Do you not realize Ca needs water and snow pack during the winter and spring to avoid droughts? You freggin' get enough sun already. Ya, haha, the east coast people, hahaha...just shut up all you ignorant people. This is why I can't stand Ca and hope it goes under and gets a massive drought. I am a Ca native, born and raised but am not proud of it. Don't even think of moving to another state, stay here. I want to watch all you fake idiots suffer. Thank the Lord I will be moving...not soon enough! HahA...don't choke on the smog this summer!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
