Hey all, I'll be 17 1/2 on the 17th of this month and I know that you don't need a driving instructor to get my license if I'm that age. I went to schedule the appointment for when I'll be 17 1/2 and it said my permit had expired (which it has knowingly I just didn't want to renew it for 2 months before getting my license since it's a waste of money) can someone explain to me what I do here? I shouldn't have to have my permit renewed if I don't need the driving instructor right? If I do need my permit I can't renew it now I have to start over and take the test again. Thanks for your help

Well, once you're 18, you don't need the learner's permit anymore. Although you would still need someone to teach you how to drive, since to get your initial license, you take a practical driving test.

Embarrassingly, I am 38 and don't know how to drive yet. lol. I never learned in high school. It wasn't a free class at my school. Most did learn, but they went to a private driver's ed school. I didn't have a good relationship with my dad at the time, so, despite making a lot of money, I didn't think he was going to pay for that class. Back then I assumed I would get a good paying job since most perceived me as smart.

At some point I would like to learn how to drive but it costs money to go take a course and it isn't a high priority right now.

well I know that I'm allowed to take the license test with no driver's ed at 17 1/2 but I just wasn't sure if I needed the permit for it. Are you saying that I do unless I'm 18? Also, since it expired would I need a new permit? Because they won't let you renew an expired permit which in my opinion is BS.

Well, keep in mind, "I Am Not A Lawyer" (IANAL). But I believe that if you are operating a motor vehicle on a public road -- as opposed to practicing on somebody's farm or something -- you need to have some kind of license. If you don't have the full license then you would need the permit.

That's weird. I guess you need a new one, then.
