Wives replace husbands. Husbands replace wives. Cousins swap seats. Brothers follow one another. Parents run for seats formerly held by their children. Now this!

The Senate Rules Committee has appointed the mother of former Sen. Dean Florez to a paid post on the California Medical Assistance Commission. Fran Florez, a former Shafter councilwoman and San Joaquin Hospital community board member, lost a November bid for the 30th Assembly District to Republican David Valadao.
The Shafter Democrat, who also ran for the Assembly in 2008, has served on the California High-Speed Rail Authority. Her term on the board, which coordinates health care services for Medi-Cal recipients, comes with an annual salary of $56,095 and ends Jan. 1, 2013.

Either her administrative skills are really that broadly applicable or they'll plug just anyone into any position- if she's someone's mommy.

It's not who you know, it's what you know.

The political feud between the Florez and Parra families from Kern County (both families are Dems) is interesting to watch.

It started when Dean Florez endorsed a candidate for Kern County supervisor who defeated the incumbent Pete Parra. Pete's daughter Nicole Parra was in the Assembly at the time and began using political moves to interfere with bills from Dean Florez.

When Nicole Parra termed out in 2008, Fran Florez ran for the Assembly seat (that was the election mentioned in the quote above). Instead of supporting a fellow Democrat, Nicole Parra endorsed the Republican candidate as her successor. The Republican ended up defeating Fran Florez for the Assembly seat.
