I'm planning a Highway 101 Road Trip from the San Juan islands near Seattle down to the Redwood Forest and possibly further south.

I'm trying to figure out where to stay overnight.

Are there any "must see" small towns you would recommend? Is there any specific area you consider worthy of staying a few nights to explore in depth?

We took that trip year ago and it is fantastic. One of the most beautiful drives in CA. We also swung over and did the 49 trail which the kids loved. Stay in Monterey if you can and see the aquarium.

Lincoln City, Florence, Brookings OR.

In CA, Trinadad, Fortuna. I would Pass on Cresent City and Eureka. If you go futher south, Swing over to Hwy 1 and head south to Mendocino

Trinadad is great spot to explore the Humbolt coast and Redwood National Park.

I'd try to start on the Port Townsend Ferry first.

I've done the trip a few times and I think there's enough great little towns along the way to just stop when you feel like stopping.

Go at least as far south as Klamath and take the speedboat ride. Brookings is also nice and has golf as does Crescent City.

Ferndale! If not to stay, at least to visit. Then, time permitting, drive the Lost Coast (Mattole Road) around to the Humboldt Redwoods.I hear Shelter Cove is really nice too, though I've never been.

Farther south, I'd choose Fort Bragg over Mendocino. It's more down-to-earth and therefore cheaper.

For me Fort Bragg and Mendocino are apples and tomatoes. I love them both.

Fort Bragg has the Skunk and the trip thru the old growth Redwoods.
Mendocino has a wonderful art community and fine restaurants.

I love camping at the state campgrounds there. Jughandle and Van Damne.
My wife and I are heading that way next week, do a little camping and she is going to interview in Eureka.

While driving through the Central Coast of California, you may want to stop in Solvang. It's a nice little Danish community just off the 101 at Buellton.

Solvang is way down south almost to LA. Fun town and it's got some great road/mountain biking to boot, but it's pretty for south.
