I'm a New Yorker looking to move to California and want to find a small, community of writers, painters, etc. no further north than one hour outside of San Francisco and as far south as Los Angeles. I welcome your ideas!

Merna

Here's my list south to north:

Palm Springs
Laguna Beach
Claremont
Topanga Canyon
Ojai
Santa Barbara
Cayucos
Cambria
Lucia
Big Sur
Carmel
Monterey
Santa Cruz
Sonora
Palo Alto
Berkeley
San Francisco
Marin
Sonoma
Chico
Arcata

Some are "small" [eg.Cayucos/Cambria/Lucia/Big Sur/Sonora/Arcata]. Some "outside" [eg. Chico/Arcata].

The previous poster had a decent list for you to help in your research. I lived in Ojai (Southern CA) for some time and have family and friends in Sebastopol (Northern CA) and I think they both are cool, small, artsy, communities. Good luck!

Mendocino is a gorgeous, tiny coastal town full of artists.

Too bad that you are looking north of L.A. Laguna Beach is in Orange County, (next to Newport Beach), that is a must!! Artsy-Fartsy central! My husband and I love it! We live about 15 minutes away because we can't afford living there though. Another in Orange COunty is the city of Orange, (esp. downtown Orange is a must!). Cute cute cute little town. Fun to grab a cup of coffee and browse. Too bad you really want north from L.A. because Orange County has a lot of fun towns. Up north, 4 hours north of L.A., is San Luis Obispo. College town that has lots of writers, artists, philosophers, and people who love the organic way of living. We used to live in Santa Maria, (which is about 35-40 minutes away because we couldn't afford San Luis Obispo). Have fun searching and good luck. If you make over $80,000 a year, California could be fun. We are moving out, housing has gone way out of line. ...oh yes, also try Marin County! Gorgeous and the people are what you probably are looking for! That's in the San Francisco area. -
