If anyone has a chance to see the Sequoias in Sequoia or Yosemite park in winter, it is worth the drive, un crowded and the trees rising out of the snow are spectacular.

It really depends on what kind of environment and atmosphere you are looking for. Northern Ca has it all, basically. If your interest is in the city or architecture for example, visit San Francisco for great site seeing, food, and culture. If you want to take in the outdoors and natural beauty, there is too much to choose from to even begin to list here. The redwoods on our northernmost coast are the gem of the state, if you ask me. Areas around Tahoe are beautiful, as well as the surrounding rivers. Yosemite is magnificent. So much more I could list.
Basically, toss a dart at the map and you'll find something worth discovering in Nor. Cal.

Am always surprised whenever folks say Northern California, they always seem to assume it's either Central Cali and the Bay area, or maybe at best, just up the coast along 101. But if you look at the map, there's at least another whole third of the state that's north of Sacramento and San Francisco!

Besides the afore-mentioned Mt. Shasta (don't miss the dinner train tour or nearby funky Dunsmuir), also go check out Lassen National Park, which is gorgeous and still has an active volcano! In fact inland all along the Sierra foothills that line the central valley, there are dozens of charming and interesting mountain communities and wineries, going back to the gold rush days, with no traffic! And one of the all-time favorite roads anywhere for sportscars and bikers is Highway 36 thru the Trinity alps, connecting 101 and Fortuna on the coast with Redding (and the famous Sundial Bridge).
