Yo, brah, these cities are so bubbles!

Dean Torrence, who wrote and sang the song in the first place, said he’s backing his hometown — Huntington Beach — in this debate.

“I co-wrote the song and I’m really loaning the song and song title to Huntington Beach,” he said. “I’m not loaning it to Santa Cruz. Sure, Santa Cruz is cool, but it’s not Surf City, USA. I’ve been there, I went to the beach, and I didn’t see anyone surfing.”

Dean may live in HB now but he's not from HB originally. He's from West LA originally and when Jan and Dean were in their heyday lived in the Sunset Strip/Hollywood Hills area.

Sure Dean...That's because there are few beach breaks in Santa Cruz except for longboarders and beginners surfing Cowells--people surf point breaks like Steamer's Lane or Pleasure Point. I think ol' Dean actually told a Santa Cruz audience that it wasn't Surf City during a performance at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. He got booed and hasn't been invited back since.

Anyhow, Huntington Beach has lot more successful marketing campaign for their Surf City image than Santa Cruz, although the surf museum in Santa Cruz is in the old lighthouse on the point near Steamer's Lane which is pretty hard to beat. Huntington can call itself Surf City if it wants, but ask any California surfer what's a better place to surf, and they are going to go for the waves of Santa Cruz--or spots in San Diego.

Just to get back the original topic though, I think my favorite beaches in Southern California are down in San Diego County.

San Diego for its white sand beaches and warmer water. "Warmer" being only a relative term here.

How do these revivals of threads happen?
