I was thinking of going there next fall to major in computer science. Is this a good school to do it at? How does it compare to Cal State Long Beach?

they are about the same as far as academically, but SDSU may have a leg up as SD has a IT/tech sector in its local economy, which may make it better when trying to get internships/jobs. Then again LBSU is just a short drive away from IT/Tech job sectors in OC and LA. They are about even. I would visit each campus and see which campus feels right.

SDSU has been known as a party school for years. That's not to say it doesn't have a decent computer science program. But UCSD is more well known for its science programs. SDSU is more known for its business school.

Here is a thread discussion it: //www.city-data.com/forum/san-d...d-vs-sdsu.html.

That said as someone who reviews resumes for IT positions its not merely a school's ranking that I look at, but rather the entire individual. For example I would hire an SDSU (or any other accredited school) grad for junior postion over UCSD grad if that person had more practical experience. Most college students, especially in the IT field understimate the importance of gaining experience while in school. Interships/part-time relevant work experience is one of the biggest distinguishers between new grads when our managers look at them. Keep in mind a degree is just a bare minimum starting point. In the IT industry relevant Experience is King. Your goal should be to obtain work experience in the latest technologies before graduation. This experience is so valuable in fact that it would be worth volunteering your time to get it or taking minimum wage. Certain European countries require extensive internships before graduation. I think that model better prepares students for the transition from academia to the work force.

CSULB has a pretty good reputation for its science programs. My first two managers at a large fortune 500 company got their masters degrees in computer science from there - paid for by the company.

All things being equal (though they never are) the candidate from the school with a better reputation would be preferred. However in the hundreds of resumes I've reviewed I never see this -> two entirely equal candidates except for school. It always come back to experience number one, then other less tangibles - fit within the corporate culture, etc...

SDSU is one of the better State schools. It certainly isn't at the top of the list like UC campuses but you should be happy with the education you will get.

I worked with one lady at a large insurance company several years ago who graduated from San Diego State, and she confirms that it indeed is a party school!

I think just about every CSU has a varying degree of party school status.

they are probably the same academically but I don't know the details. If you are also taking in to consideration campus life Long Beach is more of a commuter school than sdsu is so it might be a little more dead on the weekends but both have great parties( and near the beach). Go to each campus visit the instructors and see which school you like better
