You guys are out of your cotton picking minds. That home would sell for $50,000 here. No wonder my nephew moved away and he makes $100,000 a year. Geesh. What a dump.

Should tell you something about the dump you're residing in, shouldn't it? =D

Make $100k+ too .. i thought the same thing... So do many smart others :
//www.city-data.com/forum/calif...an-moving.html
"Unable to afford Orange County's sky-high rents, she opted for Portland, Ore. "A big motivator was that I lived with roommate after roommate after roommate," said McCluer, 30. "Friends said you could probably live on your own up here. The rent was a huge deal for me.""

Felt the same way.. Home prices are insane and so is the crazy rent... Can buy a home for cash in a great up and coming city w/ great job opportunities. Climate/nature is amazing in California but not that amazing.

Your nephew made a smart choice.. Hopefully your nephew endured the insanity for a few years and saved boat loads in order to go buy one cash and save 30 years of his life slaving 10/12 hours a day.

Cheers !

Sounds about right... Not the best starter home in my area, however. Wife and I are looking at dropping about 800k when we move from our condo.

That's the way it is - my parents bought their houses back in the 60's and 70's. A total investment of about 30,000 dollars is now worth 3,000,000 dollars... I doubt we'll be so lucky.

There are no $550k starter homes anywhere in CA. I don't understand your post.

The house was on HGTV this evening. Showed a young couple searching for a house in the Ventura area. It will probably be rerun or you can go to their web site to see it.

Hasn't the housing bubble hit CA yet? It has everywhere else. Here it is----

David and Christina are not only newlyweds, they also teach in the same 4th grade classroom. Now they're embarking on their next project: buying their first home in Los Angeles. The couple wants to live near the private school where they work, in the upscale San Fernando Valley town of Sherman Oaks. They love to bike through the canyons south of legendary Ventura Boulevard, but the real estate prices in that area often start in the millions of dollars, so they'll settle for buying a place that's close to Ventura. But even with that compromise, with a budget of $550,000, can they find a starter home that's big enough, and updated enough, to meet their exacting tastes?

Supply & demand. If you can find a starter home for $50k in your area, it's because noone wants to live there.

It really depends on your definition of "starter home". For some people, a starter home is a 2500 sf place in immaculate conditions with granite countertops, three car garage and a pool.

Besides, the show seems to be talking about a family trying to buy a "starter home" in one of the more expensive parts of Southern California. And even there you can buy a "starter home" for about $300k if you set your expectations right. For $500k, you can buy this

5 HOLSTER Ln, Bell Canyon, CA 91307 | MLS# F11065555
