I am in a unique situation and was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on the rather foggy restrictions EDD enforces. I am about to receive my first unemployment check (just finished my two week waiting period last week). I already have a job and start date for a new position in Vancouver, Canada that begins on the 6th of February. Can I collect unemployment from California if I emigrate to Canada (will they even know I've left? I do have to suffer a thorough Canadian Immigration process...). My wife is not moving for a few months so it would be easy enough for her to deposit the checks until I start working and then I'll let them know I'm working. I'm not hoping they don't catch me working in Canada. I was just planning on moving to Vancouver around Jan 15th and would like to collect the benefits I'm due until the 6th of Feb. If I can't collect I may stay in California longer. Just curious if anyone has any input. I've already written EDD but am expecting a weeks delay before I can get any answers. Thanks for the help.

If I remember correctly you have to be in the state, and ready and willing and looking to work, in order to collect unemployment insurance. So the day you leave for Canada, is the last day you will be able to collect in California.

Who cares? Going 5 MPH over the limit isn't legal, and neither is spitting on the sidewalk. Never stopped anyone that I can see

I'm glad you are moving to canada with that mentality of working the system.

You'll fit in fine over there. 1 Down, 20 million to go.
