Santa Rosa and surrounding communities are affordable and have lots of sunshine. The growing season is very long and you do have a close proximity to SF. In addition it is quite tolerant. And i could go on and on,,,OH YES! IT is the wine country!

I am not knocking SC as i used to spend many days sunning and surfing but still find it pricey. It is a lovely scenic place.
Even if you were knocking SC i'd be o.k. with that.
There are things about it to knock, no doubt.
Also, Santa Cruz county is what i always recommend (not necessarily S.C. proper) and i much prefer other towns in the county over Santa Cruz. Aptos and Soquel are where i have lived most and are my communities of choice in the county.
Santa Rosa area sounds like a good suggestion to me.
I just don't know it well enough to give advice about it.
And when you say "affordable" of course that's a relative thing but i imagine it's just a bit less pricey that Santa Cruz county and depends on where you are up there?

Smile Thank you everyone!

Thank you to everyone who posted on this thread. I am new to this forum thing & it has been a great experience.

From all the input i've received from everyone my mom and I are narrowing things down to CA. I posted new threads asking for specific feedback on CA areas.

I don't know how to close a forum so people don't think i'm still needing input? Maybe you can't. I've searched city-data and can't find anything on how to do this.

Just wanted everyone to know. Thank you again.

I moved to Placitas, NM, from the Bay Area ago nine years ago. Placitas is about 20 miles north of Albuquerque and 35 miles south of Santa Fe.

If you can find a good-paying job here, you'll think you're in Nirvana. The weather, culture, landscapes, and especially the people make this a very special place.

Come out for a short visit and see what you think.
