We are a young, liberal family wanting to move to CA from Asheville,NC. We enjoy green living. We work as servers, with degrees in sustainable technologies. We have researched and seem to like San Francisco best, but know of it's expense. Any other ideas for us to look? Important things for us to know??

Thanks!

HI..!
Follow your dreams!
SF is expensive... But if you can get some good advice on how to live on the cheap.. I can not see why you can not do it..

You should post in the San Francisco forum. The biggest problem with raising kids in CA is that you need a fabulous income to buy a mediocre house in a good school district if you want your kids to go to decent public schools. Incomes here are higher, but almost never enough to make up for the difference in cost of living.

I think San Francisco has a lottery for schools, so your kid could be sent to a school anywhere in the city.

As you're likely going to be renting, I'd recommend taking a long look at the east bay listings on craigslist. You're just going to get more for your money period.

Start with Oakland.

Consider Santa Cruz county (not necessarily S.C. proper).

Santa Cruz County, California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's a very green / eco-friendly / eco-conscious area and it's less frenetic and less impacted than the bay area which, for me, is just way too impacted.
There are many rural, semi-rural and sub-urban living options in the county.
It is expensive though as are most communities on the CA coast until you get quite a bit farther north.

santa cruz co apts/housing for rent classifieds - craigslist

The other area to consider is Sonoma county ... north of S.F. but with communities that are likewise green and liberal (Healdsburg comes to mind - Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau - California)

p.s. What's a server?
