Until you get to Union Square of San Francisco Center. SF is a different type of liberal than say Oakland or Berkeley. In SF, they can be quite intolerant of anything not like them, in much the same way many conservatives are.

I lived in both cities (cities proper, that is) and I'd say L.A. gets this one. Not sure how Santa Monica and Venice deserve mention, though. Venice at one time, for a long time, but Venice has been changing for a while and is hardly counter-cultural. Nevermind Santa Monica.

Actually it's those that work in that evil industry, entertainment, who are most irreverent. That means folks in Burbank or all over the Valley. They see absurdity and can be really hilarious about it, from the trades to the wannabe talent. Think also how Pop Art had three spontaneous loci: London, New York, and Los Angeles. Cultural self-critique is native.

San Francisco is not very good at really making fun of itself. I mean really to its core being self-mocking. As a whole it's just too proud.

Ding ding ding!

I have met Bay Areans that don't take themselves so seriously. However, by and large, the ones I've met here in the Bay like that have otherwise been from L.A. or the South. A lot of native Bay Areans, as well as certain immigrant groups and Midwest transplants for whatever reason, can hardly take a joke.

The problem with this statement is what gets defined as "ignorance". Often, SF liberals like to pass off their POV as fact and anyone who doesn't agree with it is deemed "ignorant". Yes, I get it. Conservatives do this, too. But the hypocrisy of some of those who profess to be liberal and open minded can be awfully galling.
