After living 25 years in the SF Bay Area, and spending ALL of my vacation time in the High Sierra, I'm now retired and finally able to live where I want (as opposed to where my work dictates).

The High Sierra is my very favorite place on earth -- esp. the Yosemite region. I'm trying to find a small town, with plenty of nearby hiking and camping, as well as ready access to the High Sierra (when roads are open!) I really don't like excessive heat, so avoiding anything in the valley.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for particular towns or areas?? Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks!

Mike

Mariposa County would be a good spot for easy access to Yosemite. Hwy 140 is the all weather highway into Yosemite Valley and from the town of Mariposa to there is just an hour. We lived in the little settlement of Midpines about seven miles up the highway from there and it was a bit cooler (about 2,700 feet elevation).

Another good option would be the Oakhurst/Bass Lake area of Madera County. Its on Hwy 41 which is the southern road into the park and has easy access to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoia trees and the Wawona area. Oakhurst is a fair sized town with better shopping than Mariposa (but about the same elevation - 2,200 feet).

My favorite area is Tuolumne County and the area around the towns of Sonora and Columbia. Very scenic and historic and still fairly close to Yosemite.

I've always thought the perfect little town in the Sierra Nevada foothills was Volcano in Amador County.

I know you want to get as high up to miss some summer heat but you will get the winter snow even worse. I am in Columbia, we get a couple inches of snow that melts off in a day or two. The summers do get hot but it is a dry heat. Not as bad as desert dry heat but it will stay at 98 for a few months.

Sonora, actually most of Yosemite is in Tuolumne county of which Sonora is the country seat- access Yosemite from Groveland/Cherry Lake area
adjacent Columbia, where ferretkona lives.
Visit Sonora
Sweet little town I grew up in- they kind of ruined it IMHO developing East Sonora like every other flippin' place in the country with big box stores, vast parking lots and just overall crappy planning but a mile off 108 on either side nice country areas still exist and the original "old Sonora" is still great.

Murphys is also a sweet town the next county up. Unlike Sonora, they didn't ruin it though- still has a great old school and small town feel about it.

Ahh, the Rawhide, it's been there forever! My brother still lives just on the other side of Jamestown on Petticoat Junction Lane haha (the old water tower is a couple minute walk from his house). I've had more than a few good times in Jimtown and at the Rawhide.
