Now-a-days, is it hard to find a job as a teacher in CA? I know CA has laid off a lot of teachers, but I always hear that there's a strong need for math and science teachers. Are these teachers being laid off also?

I'm originally from Orange County, CA and I'm ready to move back to CA. I've just graduated and I'm thinking about becoming a H.S. math teacher, but I wanted to know if it would be hard to find a job as a math teacher in CA??

Thanks!

Similiar thread on this not too long ago. Inland Empire, I think was recommended. Somewhere like Corona.

There is always a demand for math and science teachers. There is not always the resources to hire and retain those teachers. I have heard that there is less competition for a math teacher positions.

Many school districts are holding off on hiring or doing slight staff reductions to deal with shrinking budgets. Though, in districts with a high attrition (retirements or people quitting), they are still hiring.

Your best bet for finding a job is to use http://www.edjoin.org. That will give you a good idea of where the current positions are available, though most of them won't get posted until the end of the school year.

Areas with high population growth are still looking for teachers, look into the Inland Empire or Central Valley.

One thing to heck into is the credentailing requirements. I had a few friends who made a mid life career switch to teaching & the credentailing hurdles were a hassle. One friend who was already a teacher when she moved to CA from out of state also found the process a big pain in the you know what

I don't claim to understand it all, but it is an issue I would investigate if I were in your shoes.

Where are teachers being laid off? Schools are full & education is state mandated. There may not be many new hires, however since school districts are not getting any extra funding while the nation is in a quite serious recession. You can find teaching jobs all over California especially in large school districts like LAUSD.

It's just something I've heard through the grapevine but here's an article:

KCBS - California Teachers Ban Together to Deal with Budget Cuts

Also, I've heard about LAUSD...we all know there's a reason why there are openings there!
