VW rocks...

The TDI engine blows away anything the Japanese or American car companies have come up with..

50mpg+ while towing a trailer... Yep.

We in the USA are so far behind... Diesel is the way to go, not electric, until we have a green power grid... Till then it is just a case of NIMBYism..

Put the TDI in a hybrid and watch for 80+mpg

This is a good thing... Imagine that a company from highly regulated Socialist Europe bringing jobs to the land of "personal freedom"

It only rocks until the warrenty expires and you have to pay for the repair work yourself.

Personal experience?
I have read that too... But think it is a consperiosy against them...

I know many owners that have not had unusually high service work needed... Yes some of the Mexican assembled cars had problems... (Look for the W on the VIN.. get one assembled in Germany..)

Believe it or not just about every major automaker has R&D facilities in California. Heck, even Chinese automakers who don't sell any cars in the US have R&D facilities here because then they can advertise their cars in China as being "Designed in California". The state really has built up a large global reputation for advanced design.

No one wants to buy a car designed in Texas or Georgia but the companies line up to get their cars designed in California.

It’s really too bad the rest of the car built around the TDI engine falls apart like wet cardboard.

My Dad has a TDI Passat Wagon and the thing really is larger than a Camry or Accord but gets better mileage than just about anything on the road. I mean room for five full sized adults plus a massive station wagon back for carrying stuff but it still gets 50+mpg? My one complaint is when I drive it (which I've only done twice) it seems a bit gutless off the line but I suppose you can't have everything. The six speed manual is very smooth though and having an extra gear really does help with the fuel economy.

My family has owned several VWs and I haven't noticed much in the way of repairs.
