Hi, I am looking fro some good books about California. Not books that just take place in California, but ones that capture its spirit - California, Americana etc. - both happy and sad ones

I am talking about books similar to books/movies like

- Day of the Locust
- Grapes of Wrath
- Crash
- Chinatown
- L.A. Confidential

I tried a couple of books in the series San Francisco Noir and L.A. Noir and they were pretty lame.

Thanks a lot

I sit here in Fresno, and didn't think to recommend anything by William Saroyan.
