I'm 18 years old, I'm planning on training to become an electrician in a few years. During that time I'm going to travel. One place I'm looking at is California. I live in San Antonio Texas currently. But I'm tired of it. It's too hot. Don't really like my surroundings. I was thinking about checking out places like Huntington Beach, Orange County etc. I'm looking for a nice safe area to live in, maybe near the beach hour-few hours away. Doesn't matter. But one thing that deters me from California is the cost of living. Can an Electrician live out there decently? I've seen plenty of pictures of California and I can see that it's gorgeous. Just not sure if I could afford it. And how's the life in California?

I lived in Huntington Beach when I was 21, and I had the greatest time of my life even though when I moved there I knew no one. I found it really easy to make friends, and the people were very warm and friendly. Another thing that suprised me-coming from a small town was how safe it was. It really feels the same way where I grew up in a small town of 15,000. Not only that, but HB has access to everything like any big city. It's the best of both worlds.

Sure. You'll just need to make about $150k per year if you ever want to buy a house that would cost $120k in San Antonio.

at your age, i think you'd really enjoy the coast of southern california & meeting new people

electricians make pretty good money & living in a populated area you should do well

at 18, i wouldn't worry about buying a house, just enjoy yourself, follow your heart & whatever adventures call to you

I'd say if you are making $20 an hour you could live quite comfortablely at your age. HB, Newport Beach and Costa Mesa are good areas for someone your age. I grew up in OC and I loved it! I would go back in heartbeat if I could get in a good area and DH would go.
