Born, raised, and lived my whole life in SoCal, in my seventh decade now. I totally understand about the slurring mentioned in the Wikipedia link. Since my best lady friend of four years is a middle-school English teacher, she's always on me about how I pronounce the indefinite article, (the). Might be the Spanish influence, or my time spent visiting South America, but I am now aware, and catch myself all the time, pronouncing "the" as one would pronounce "duh".

Her bugging me about that, and part-time teaching at the local community college has made me aware how fast I talk and how I need to enunciate better. I can hear myself, and have to say it again more carefully. Sometimes, my slurring is really bad.

Nothing is more torturous than the way Noo Yawkuhs speak...that is, with the exception of the Lawnguylinduhs. "Eau moy gawawd, they put shuguh in moy cawfee instedd of the Sweetenlow oy wanted faw moy die-it! Whey-yuh is moy daw-awg? Tiff-nay, where awww yooo?" Even their little foofy looking "dawgs" seem to bark in their accents: "Wuh-uhf."

IMO, Californians speak with a very neutral accent and tend to better enunciate their words than folks from the South, Northeast, and Great Lakes regions, hence they are much "easier on the ears." Hehe.

New yorkers don't have accents anymore. Between the immigrants, status quo accent suburbanites, and midwest tranplants, you will be hard pressed just find a real new yorker anymore.
