Ok, next you're gonna crab about puppies.

But no, that's impossible, so...

(CA puppies being the coolest, fittest, trendiest, most tolerant, amazing puppies in the country!)

This thread is a big generalization. I've been to California before and. I found good people and bad people, just like everywhere else.

Some people are stuck up and full of themselves, but not everyone. You have those people everywhere. California is very diverse and I met people from all walks of life.

wow my spouse and his very large family are so cal natives; and all of the native so cal people I have met in my 15 years total [north and south CA, . south] are SO down to earth [I am from New England originally and have lived in the mountain states, as well. I know down to earth]. It's true, people move to the region to create their 'image' life and that's cool for them, but it's changed the landscape and mindset in the So cal region quite a lot. I know hollywood has always held that reality, but it was not as wide spread through this region. My spouse is 47 and the stories are fascinating about growing up in SD....

As for the OP question [i've not read the replies yet]: People in Ca, in my experience, are not smug nor do they care about being or looking cool. It's true that we don't spend much time thinking about other places. It's not smug; and I don't think i'ts clueless, either. It's more that people are busy living their lives and enjoying it. CA is a large state. And certainly californians are not the first people to like their home state, being near family, not wanting to move from their home state, etc. [in the case of natives].....

The world is full of beautiful places. California happens to be one of them.....
I just read a thread in the minneapolis forums: Minn named 4th snobbiest city in the US with a link to some article, for what that is worth. And CA cities were not ahead of it. Honestly, people in CA are not interested much in city rankings, etc. [similar to NYC]. Life's happening; we're living it.. That's my take. I have lived in several parts of the US and found pros and cons to each. In no way do I think CA is the best place ever.....but I also don't think it's a 'requisite' to be smug and cool to live here. I don't find that to be true of the people I know here, either. Plenty of down to earth, nice people, actually. And a few idiots and pretentious snobs sprinkled in. Sounds like most places, really.

Around the same time, California got gay marriage because of a decision by its state Supreme Court. That is hardly a ringing endorsement of the state's tolerance (more luck than anything), while Minnesota proved its tolerance through a vote of the people followed by a vote from its elected representatives and the governor signing the bill. We are not a leader in tolerance these days.

I noticed you conveniently left out "most well educated" in your list, because we are middle of the pack in that category. I am referring to K-12 education here. Definitely no longer a leader. Smart decision not to include it!
Tolerance comes in many forms-legally/politically/constitutionally is only one aspect. In general, CA is pretty live and let live-do your thing. It's diverse in the metro areas and while it's not kumbaya, it's also pretty relaxed; I've seen comments from posters on this forum, in fact, mention how nice it was to have it feel more integrated to them, [as a 'minority', as it were] vs. the east coast. Interestingly, I've noticed it's arguably more tolerant in so cal than nor (though nor cal thinks it's more tolerant-but tolerance is not a piece of paper or a law; it's a lifestyle-lol. It's not spewing slogans. I mean, I adored my time living in SFO 15 yrs ago; left my heart in san francisco, etc. but the over the top PC and cutting edge attitude gets old. Also, what used to be cutting edge and innovative about the region can now be found around the country. So the attitude is not quite warranted as much. Yes, CA education system leaves much to be desired, including the once acclaimed community college system. However, the state has grown in population and the infrastructure has not kept pace. The university system was designed for a smaller pool of students, for example.

Funny you mentioned Minnesota; I've recently been scouting the forums there. For sure, on paper, MN has been more progressive [which in your mind translates to tolerance]...but in reality, mindsets in terms of life, openness to meeting and befriending others, judgement towards differences, are not guaranteed. How people treat me as a perceived 'outsider' [or could care less and do not see me as an outsider] has a lot to do with 'tolerance' in my view. Theoretical reality is not tolerance. Though equal rights guaranteed by law is imperative and necessary in my view, this is not the same as tolerance. Cheers!

I grew up in California and left in 2008. But honestly the only really smug ones I met moved to California from New York. Living in California flaunting a I love NY sticker on the bumper of there cars. Now that's smug. Go back to NY you idiots. Most North Easterns ruined CA.

There will never be enough of those to ruin CA. They're not used to failing to get a rise out of people who don't care about their obnoxious blather.

Colorado is the coolest hippest state in the US. We also have better landscape, weather and activities. Many of the californians that moved here in droves seem to agree.
