Sonoma County is much more expensive than Houston. Do lots of research on housing prices before you negotiate a salary and before you move. There's lots of nice, safe areas in Sonoma County, but they will cost you. Where is the job specifically?

Hey there fellow Houstonian you really need to research this. 30$ with a kid on the way is not going to help you live as comfortably as you might think. Research as much as you can and see if they will increase your salary.

You can still live comfortably in Sonoma County, especially if you avoid the tourist towns. Santa Rosa has nice neighborhoods which are affordable (by California standards), though there are a few which are somewhat sketchy ( this thread may be helpful). Petaluma is a good option as well; safe, small-townish but enough happening you won't go crazy. Sebastapol is a cool hippy town, but getting more expensive as time goes on. Avoid Healdsberg & Sonoma proper, they're the aforementioned overpriced tourist traps. You can also seek rentals in the country areas; I have an aunt & cousin who both live in the outskirts of Sebastapol/Santa Rosa, and neither makes close to six figures a year.

i was born & raised in santa rosa. if you are going to work on admin drive, you're best bet is to look for a home north of town, possibly even in the town of windsor. the commute traffic north will be much easier than trying to go south. the closest homes will be in the fountain grove area - those are PRICEY, but you might be able to find a deal.

$30/hr will be fine for just yourself. trying to raise a family on the single income? you're going to struggle a bit. it's not completely un-doable, but it could be uncomfortable. the county of sonoma had one heck of a retirement plan at one point in time, not sure how it's changed since the economy turned....
