I lived near a ketchup factory when I was a kid. It didn't happen all the time but on some days, when the stars were lined up just so, we could smell it. It was accepted back then that you would have some odors and smells because many people actually worked in the factory at some point.

I wonder if you are going to be as shocked as I was when I realized that it is in fact LEGAL here in CA to be forced to join a Union as a condition of employment.

"Under the NLRA, you cannot be required to be a member of a union or pay it any monies as a condition of employment unless the collective bargaining agreement between your employer and your union contains a provision requiring all employees to either join the union or pay union fees"

I wonder why any company would agree to such an agreement with a Union?

That's like when former Folsom-based Waste Connections relocated their headquarters not long ago to north of Houston. Publicly they blamed "costs", but privately they admitted that they were increasingly finding Cali restrictions on dumping solid waste to be too "onerous". Naturally TX welcomed them, and their trash, with open arms.

Wrong. They moved their Corporate HQ to the Woodlands which is far North of Houston.

Their garbage and recycle facilities are all over the US including CA.

http://www.wasteconnections.com/loca...ation-map.aspx

But at least their move paid off for them financially.

"THE WOODLANDS, Texas, July 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Waste Connections, Inc. (NYSE: WCN) today announced its results for the second quarter of 2014. Revenue in the second quarter totaled $524.7 million, a 7.2% increase over revenue of $489.4 million in the year ago period."

Doesn't change the fact that the real reason Waste Connections moved was due to a hissy fit after they "lost a lobbying battle in Sacramento this year when the Legislature did not pass a bill that would have made it easier for Waste Connections and other landfill operators to move trash around the state. Specifically, it would have helped Waste Connections overturn a voter-approved initiative in Solano County (Measure E) that limits the trash it can accept at its Potrero Hills Landfill. Moving to Texas may well be a case of sour grapes."

Recycling Association Sends Waste Bully to Texas, In Response To Adverse Court Action Sponsored By NCRA At Potrero Hills Landfill In Solano County

Whaddaya bet Texas won't tolerate no dang county trash limits or hippie tree huggers… yee-hah!

Companies are moving for less taxes and cheaper labor. Plain and simple.

California inflates its labor costs by increasing demand for housing through welfare and beautiful weather which in turn increases housing costs. Also, newcomers have to pay more taxes than an investor who has owned the property for years. This all puts more pressure on housing prices to go up and people demand/need the higher wages to compensate.
